Make sure your light is unplugged, lift all of the clamps up, pull the main black lid off. Change the media, wash out the system, etc, and put the filter back together again.

Foam blocks offer mechanical filtration. They will collect a lot of particles floating in the water. That particular filter took 6 blocks. No, backwashing does not clean them very well, which is why we upgraded that system to the Bio-Activators.

That sounds like the PRF4000 ClearChoice Pressure Filter. It has been upgraded and is now the BP4000. The foam inserts for your model are available through garden centers and nurseries. Online, you can buy them here:

If it is cutting off more than once in a day, it is typcially due to either an airstone being placed near the intake tube, or sand in the aquarium. For the airstone issue, simply move it. For sand, you need to place a nylon mesh over the strainer, or cut a piece of foam media to fit inside the strainer, to prevent sand from getting into it.

No, we do not have a 1.5" adaptor for that product. However, you can buy what is called a reducer at a hardware store such as Lowes. These are sold in the plumbing section with other pvc adaptors. You need one that is 1.25" at one end and 1.5" at the other end. While there, purchase a foot or so of the smaller tubing as well. Attach this to the 1.25" end of the adaptor and then to the waterfall adaptor, and the two items will be connected.

Once every two to three weeks most likely. By the way, your tank is seriously overstocked. It is recommended to have 2-3 gallons of water for every inch of goldfish. A 2 gallon tank is adequate for a single 1 inch goldfish. We just wanted you to be aware of this as adding another one may have the end result of all three fish dying.

Question

Pump to go with your ClearChoice biofilter

I have the biofilter already. I have a new 325 gph pump to work with that filter. I need to know the size hoses, both input and output that I need for your ClearChoice biofilter. And, I need to know if the dimensions you give me are inside dimensions or outside dimensions. I am very confused about this biofilter. This is for an outside goldfish pond.

You would have received more than one inlet for this filter, and only one outlet. The outlet MUST be 1.25" i.d. and is on the bottom. The inlet can be either 3/4" or 1" i.d. You can use the universal one without the venturi or the one that has the venturi (small opening on side). The venturi pulls air into the filter as water goes through, thereby oxygenating it more, and giving more filtration. This is a gravity filter, so your outlet is on the bottom, and the outlet tubing must travel at least slightly downhill to the pond. Your pump should be fine.

Question

Why are there so many bubbles in my filter?

I just bought a 3 gallon Bubbling LED Kit. I set everything up just how the instructions said to and everything was working fine. A few hours later I noticed that the filter was dumping bubbles into the water instead of a steady flow of water like before. I can't seem to figure out why or how to fix it. Any suggestions?

You have used a little too much water conditioner or your water may have had a lot of phosphates in it. The filter would react to these things. Try adjusting the two little air valves in line with the air pump until you get the flow you want from both the filter and the LED bubbler.

Hello,
You should probably replace it when it is almost fully brown( dirty ) from the front and back, and rinse it out with hot water every month. You can buy new ones at pet stores like petsmart or petco. You should clean the tank every month. Don't forget to use water conditioner and put aquarium salt in it to prevent fungus in your tank.

Question

Which impeller is the right replacement for the Tetra FS3060?

My Tetra Advanced Power Filter FS3060 impeller is worn and I need to replace it. I have a 55 gallon sand bottom tank and I think the sand wore the impeller out prematurely. I guess I should have used some nylon or something on the intake tube.

Thanks,
J

Hi J,
Yes, sand will definitely wear it out fast, so you want to put filter floss inside the strainer, or the toe of a nylon stocking over the outside of it, etc. Call our support staff at 1-800-526-0650. They will be happy to assist you with a new impeller.

Question

will my filter media interfer with cycleing my aquarium

Im new to the hobby.I have a 46 gallon tank up and running for 5 weeks with 2 african cichlids in it. I have a fluval canister filter and i have one bag of carbon and the other is a mixed bag of carbaon and zeolite. The zeolite suppose to remove ammonia . My ammonia is 0 and the same with my nitrates. I just added tetra safestart because im not sure if my tank has cycled ? Maybe it has ? But im wondering if it never did because of the zeolite wihich i have added . Also will it starve the bacteria in the tetra safe start by removing the ammonia ?? Has anyone used this type of filter media before ??

Well, you left out one clue - what is your nitrite? If you are truly zero for all three, then most likelly you have not cycled. Zeolite is commonly used, and we have never heard of it just completely removing ammonia to the point it would starve bacteria. However, you do not have very many fish for your size tank, so it could just be the fact that the tank is not producing much ammonia at all. One good way to test if it has cycled or not, is to go ahead and add 2 or 3 new fish, and take readings within a couple of hours after adding them, 12 hours afterwards, and again at 24 hours.

Question

Question about the whisper ex30 filtration system.

I was recently told that I should not be replacing the carbon filters as I'm losing beneficial bacteria which control amonia levels. The actual filter says it has a bio-scrubber that I havent been replacing that handles nitrites & amonia. Is that actually happening, or is my tank not cycled or cycling repeatedly? Basically, should I actually be replacing the carbon filters as directed or am I harming the fish by doing so?

YES, you should definitely be replacing the carbon filters every three to four weeks! The bio-scrubber is your permanent source of biological filtration (beneficial bacteria) within the filter system, and should never be replaced. It should be rinsed every couple of months just to "unclog" it.

Typically, it means the filter has either pulled something into, a piece of debris, etc, that has interfered with the impeller assembly, or it is overdue for general maintenance and again, the impeller needs cleaning.

2.6 liters per minute. How long the diphragms last will vary according to whether it is properly installed, the proper size for the application, and how often or well the airstone, etc, is maintained. Average life is between 1 and 2 years, longer for an experienced hobbyist.

If you’re asking how many days in a row you should let your filter run in the tank, then the answer is that you should have it running 24/7, and only turn it off occasionally for cleaning. If you’re asking how often you should be changing the cartridges, and cleaning the filter, then the answer is every 3 to 4 weeks.
