We do not make a 3.5 gallon tank at all, and all of our Glofish tanks have LED lights, which take multiple small led bulbs that cannot be replaced. I'm not sure what kit you have, unfortunately. If you believe it is ours, please call into our support staff at 1-800-526-0650 with a UPC code or item number.

3 would be fine, once the tank has been set up a month or so, and allowed to establish its nitrogen cycle. You want one inch of fish per gallon of water, which is why they recommended 2 fish only, since glofish grow to 1.5" in length. However, this type of fish does better with a larger group. Just be sure to change 1/3 of the water once a week and replace it with new water.

Question

3 fish in the 3 gallon not a good idea

We have a 3 gallon glofish tank and got 3 fish to go into it. One fish, after 2 days, became VERY aggressive and started "nipping "at one of the fish. The fish died from being bit at. I took back the dead one and the aggressive one and got 2 more fish that I watched in the tank at the store for a bit...by the next morning one was nipping at another. I think the 3 gallon is too small for more than one, the fish must feel crowded and are competing for space. Have to take 2 back and keeping only one...hopefully "tellulah" doesn't get too lonely. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated, my daughter really wanted more than one fish :(

Hello,
GloFish are comprised of three different species of fish which carry the gene that causes them to "glo." The three species of GloFish are danios, tetras, and tiger barbs. Tiger barbs are known to be very territorial and do best in groups of 5 or more. The larger the group, the less aggressive they tend to be. For a three gallon kit, we would not recommend putting more than 2 fish together as the general rule for a healthy ratio of waste-to-water percentage. Obviously the first step will be to determine which species of GloFish you purchased. If it is tiger barb, he/she may or may not tolerate another tank mate but should do okay with an aquarium snail such as a mystery snail. Please note however that if you are experiencing fish loss, it may very well have been from an ammonia spike (immature tank and too much waste which then hit a toxic level) and not from the stress of injury alone.

Question

Do bubbling tanks glow as much as tanks with the light on top?

Since this tank does not have a blue LED light on top and instead has a bubbling light at the bottom will the fish still glow as much?

Yes, different sized kits come with different sized lights. The bubbling LED ring is more than ample lighting to make your GloFish stand out!

Start with one for the first couple of weeks to cycle the tank safely. Then add new fish slowly, one at a time, every few days, as long as your ammonia and nitrite levels are okay. You can keep up to 6 fish that will get no larger than 1" each or up to 3 fish in the range of 2" each. Some good varieties would be cherry barbs, neon tetras, fancy guppies, glofish, corydoras catfish, platies.

Most likely you are getting a bacterial bloom. Most often this is due to overfeeding or adding your fish too fast. Change about 25% of the water and put some new water in, along with your Aquasafe. Reduce feeding to once a day, one piece of food per fish, and add Tetra Safe Start, 24 hours after the water change.

The water is kind of clean, however there are some kind of brown little residual stuff on the aquarium. But i dont know how to clean it, i just changed te water three days ago...i changed the filter as well. I dont understand how in the pet stores they can keep the water so clean...there is any solution or product for this? Please help...i love my glow fish and they look more beautiful if the water is clean....thank you

The amount of food should be one flake per fish, twice a day.

As for keeping it clean, vacuum the gravel once a week, remove 25% of the water, and then put new water into the tank with conditioner.

The brown particles you are seeing sound like diatoms. New tanks go through different phases over the first 4-6 months. You treat the diatoms like algae, and when you do your partial water change, just clean the inside of the tank glass with a soft cloth. Just wipe it up and down. If you get on a regular routine, the tank will look gorgeous once it has established itself, but it will take some time, and you will always have times when algae is present.

Stores maintain perfect looking tanks because they have clerks to work on them throughout the day, all day long.

Nathan,
Yes - all GloFish varieties need a warmer water temperature than most home environment temperatures provide. GloFish are freshwater tropical fish which need a water temp. around the 78 degree (Fahrenheit) mark.

Either the Marineland 10 watt mini heater or Visi Therm 25 watt heater would be fine. We make the Marineland line of products as well.

Yes, that is more than enough aeration.

Question

We purchased Marineland 3G tank. Can you fit 2-3 glowfish (max. size 3"/fish)?

Local petstore recommended the tank and glwfish. But after setting up tank and went back to another store branch to get fish, salesperson said that 3 gallon was too small even for 1 glofish. Also told us that glofish like to swim in 3s. They recommended at least a 10 gallon. What should we do. Can we keep the 3G tank and just get 2-3 glofish that get up to a maximum size of 3"/fish?

You are definitely getting some conflicting advice! There are 3 main varieties of glofish: danios, tiger barbs, and white tetras. They are all naturally occurring species in the wild that have had their DNA altered in a lab to create the glofish variety of the species. Only the tiger barb variety may get as large as 3". The danio and white skirt tetra will not get as large. Start with one fish for the first couple of weeks, and gradually add 2 or 3 more of one of the smaller varieties. Stay within that variety. Such as the danios. Do not add a danio to 2 tetras, for example. The danios do need to school, as do the barbs, but the tetras are not schooling fish.
