Usually by taking the impeller out and turning the gray part at the bottom should reactivate the impeller if that doesn’t work, then you can purchase a new one at a pet store that specialises in fish/aquarium stuff or my suggestion would be a Big Al’s online or the store.

Hello,

Try pulling out the impeller assembly from the motor itself, and soaking it in distilled white vinegar for an hour. Clean out the motor area with a Q-tip and vinegar. If this does not bring the filter back up and running, there may have been a power surge, and you will need to replace the entire filter system. Unfortunately, we do not sell motors separately.

1. Timestrips come with most filter replacements.

2. Just some advice: Goldfish are not good beginer fish, they produce a lot of waste, and you should use a very powerfull filter when keeping them. Also, good job on getting a large tank, because small tanks are not suitable for goldfish due to lare waste production. (p.s. ~ if your wordering how i know what type of fish you have and your tank size, it says right below your question.)

Question

Why is the Whisper EX 70 Power Filter so noisy?

I recently took over a 55 gallon Aquarium that came with the Whisper EX 70 Power Filter. The tank was owned by the previous owner for almost 1 year and I am the second owner. The system has an irritating hum that is pretty noisy. It is in my living room and I can hear it right up to my bed room which is about 15 meters away. It disturbs us at night. Could this be because of wear and tear or is it a systems design fault? Please provide a solution too.

I have the same problem.

When i first bought my EX30 filter, it was absolutely silent and filtered perfectly, now, after owning it for a while, it is starting to hum loudly and annoyingly.

To what i know, this is NOT a systems design fault, only wear and tear.

The only way i know to fix it is to give the filter system a FULL cleaning (except the Biological filters, of course). By full cleaning, i mean disassemble it and clean the entire thing by rinsing it all in warm water, and then scrub any algae or waste off of it. Also reset and clean the magnetic motor (see tetra website for how to do that). This is only a temporary fix, but it works.

Tips:
~Remember to NEVER clean the Bio-Filter. If the Bio-Filter gets exessivly clogged, only LIGHTLY rinse it in luke-warm tap water.
~Remember to regularly clean your filter compartment and replase your filter.
~See Tetra and TetraCare sites for more info.

Hi,
Any of our filters that are noisy would in most cases be due to a flaw in the impeller. It's the only moving piece. So you'll need to take it out and check on it. It is very easy to do on this model. Unplug the filter, and take it to your sink. Pour out the water. Then look at the intake tube. Follow it from the strainer up and you'll see a line marked "Minimum Water Line." If you water is lower than this you'll get noise. Right above this mark you can pop the intake tube off the motor and take out the impeller. Look at it and see if there are any imperfections. You may need to soak the impeller in a cup of distilled white vinegar for a couple hours. Rinse if off well and make sure the compartment it goes in is also clean in the motor. Re-assemble the filter and try it again. If you still get noise, contact us at consumersupport@unitedpetgroup.com or at 1-800-526-0650. We will assist in getting a new impeller mailed out for you. We'll need your name, address, phone number, and the model of your filter (EX 70) with a brief description of the problem if you email.

Question

Tetra EX70 issues

I have had the EX70 for 6 months and have nothing but issues! We have a 55 gallon tank with 4 goldfish and a plecostomus and the filter propeller constantly stops. We have had other filters and like the power of this one, and it would be perfect if it worked. Is this normal? How can I fix it? I have cleaned it with warm water, but it didnt help.

1. No, this is not normal, but i have similar issues.

2.** multiple issues you may be having are: 1. Goldfish and Plecos produce a LOT of biological waste, and may be too much for your tank/filter to handle. 2.You need to do more than clean it with warm water, You Need To: 1.**take the bottom off your filter and check the magnetic proppeler, it may be clogged or off callibrated. 2.take the filters and biological filters out and rince the intire inside out with warm water, then scrub any algae or wase off the inside with a dry paper towel. DO NOT RINSE OR CLEAN THE BIOLOGICAL FILTER, they house good bacteria that keep your fish alive. Also, replace your Filter (NOT Biological Filter) about every 2 weeks, or use a Timestrip.

3. You said in your question the propeller constantly stops, this may be caused by one of the things in part '2.' (Look for these stars: '**', throughout my answer)

Hello,

Thank you for contacting us. Impellers generally stop due to buildup of minerals or metals, detritus, hair, sand, or large fish bumping the filter. These are some of the possible reasons why yours stops often.

In case it is minerals, try pulling the impeller out, and soaking it in distilled white vinegar for 30 minutes every month or so. Using a Q-tip soaked in vinegar, swab out the motor area where the impeller usually resides.

If you have sand, you may want to switch to gravel, or cover the strainer with the toe of a nylon stocking to prevent sand from getting into the filter system.

If the fish are large, try placing a large cluster of very tall plants in front of the intake tube to prevent them from getting into that area. Plastic plants would work best.

If you continue to have issues, email or call us and we will try a new impeller for your system. Our number is 1-800-526-0650.

Tetra EX70 Power Filter impeller replacement

I have liked using a Tetra EX70 Power Filter for many months now. But, the magnetic impellers on both of my units are now NOT working. I see no source of replacement impellers. Is there another model that will serve as a replacement? If not, why no replacement impellers? I can't bear to consider throwing away the whole unit to but another.

Hello Jonah,

Thank you for your inquiry. On the back of the cover, there is an area that you can cut out with a sharp pair of scissors for your filter system. If the cover is a glass canopy, you will have a clear plastic strip that you attach along the back. Cut out an appropriately sized portion of it to make the filter fit.

Hello,

Exactly what type of substrate were you thinking of using? Sand, dolomite, crushed coral, fluorite? It should work with any of these. If you choose sand, you must keep it from being pulled into the filter system as it will destroy any impeller.

Question

Is the Whisper EX70 ok for use in saltwater?

Got advice from a local big box about setting up a saltwater tank, not a good idea. They gave me some other stuff that ended up being bad news for salt water, just wanted to make sure that this filter is ok.

If so, is there some sort of attachment where I could bring the intake into the center of my live rock formation to draw oxygen through and create a suitable environment for anemone?

Hello,

Yes and no. It can definitely be used in saltwater, as far as the equipment is concerned, and I personally think it works just as well as any other filter. HOWEVER, (you had to know there was a but coming), that being said, they only work well in salt water if you maintain them frequently or instead of using carbon filters, add biological media and customize it for your tank.

As to your other question, no, you won't be able to do that. We can send you additional tubes so you can extend the strainer down, but that is not what you need to do to create the right environment for a reef style tank. There is too much to cover here in an email. I think you should call in on our helpline and ask for me. Sounds like you may need more assistance with your tank than your store is giving you. I'm happy to help.

The bioscrubber is your permanent source of biological filtration within the filter system, where beneficial bacteria grow and break down nitrogenous waste. It should only be cleaned when it is becoming clogged. You may use a soft toothbrush and water from the tank to perform the cleaning.

Hello,

If you have carnival goldfish, they are most likely comet feeder goldfish. These should be able to handle the Whisper EX 20 without any trouble unless there is a water quality issue such as high ammonia or nitrite. A 10 gallon tank is suitable for one or two of these fish when they are juveniles. Be sure to test for ammonia at least weekly, as this is a common problem with goldfish. Also, be sure to change 25% of the water weekly to keep their tank in good shape.

Fish that become attached to the strainer are usually either very sick or passed away due to water quality, stress or illness.
