Customer Questions & Answers for
Whisper® Internal Aquarium Power Filters

Whisper Internal Power filters are the ultimate in quiet, convenient 3-stage filtration. The dualsided mesh of the Bio-Bag catches debris and fish waste while the activated carbon absorbs odors and discoloration. Biological filtration is provided by the Bio-Scrubber. Bio-Scrubber's anti-clog design provides complete biological filtration with the convenience of less maintenance. Because the Bio-Scrubber has a solid back, water is forced to flow evenly over the bacteria-rich bristles.

My filter does this too! And it does it even the moment I put in a fresh filter. I honestly have had the tank set up for about a year, with the same filter running in it. It is a 15gal tank, with the 40gal filter. I like the filter it's really quiet and the water stays clear for about a week, even though I have the tank WAY overstocked. There is a ton of calcium in my water.

Anyway. I just ignore it. But I agree with you. I don't think it should be happening.

This usually happens when the filter becomes clogged. At one week, it should still be pretty much just white with very little debris. If you find a lot of debris, cut back on the amount of food you are feeding. We recommend one flake per fish once a day.

The water motion provided by your filter also aerates the water fortunately. You will not likely need a separate air pump. Some people just enjoy how the bubbles look in the aquarium. In ceratin cases where the fish tank is overstocked with fish an air pump may be necessary if the fish are competing for available oxygen. This situation is not recommended of course. You might also need an air pump if you have added an undergravel filter, which uses the air pumps to operate.

Question

Tetra - Whisper Internal Power Filter 2-10 Gallons

I just bought a filter for my crab tank - the tank is not filled all the way - plugged in the new filter one already set inside the tank and submerged in the water - and it did not start pumping water. I have dealt with other filters in the past, never had a tetra filter before - but this is the only one I have ever had an issue with. Any troubleshooting advice? I have plugged it into multiple outlets to see if that was the issue and it wasn't. Can i get a new one or something? I liked the idea that it didn't have an intake tube so the motor wouldn't be damaged. I have seen good reviews on this filter online, and would like to give it a try. I bought it at walmart and don't intend on bringing back a filter with the cartridge that was already dunked in the water when I primed the filter.

Hello,
Sorry to hear it isn't starting. All of our filters run with magnetic impellers. The first thing to do is to check this for obstruction or defect. On these internal filters you take off the bottom cover with the vertical slots in it. There may be screws on the bottom that need to come out. Then you can access the motor which will have a cover that slides off. Take out the impeller and inspect it. Make sure it appears ok and there is nothing preventing it from spinning. Re-assemble the filter. Then try it again. If you get noise but it does not start, you have a defetive impeller. Contact us at consumersupport@unitedpetgroup.com with your name, address, and phone number and the model number of your filter. Request a new impeller. You can also call 1-800-526-0650.

If you have done this troubleshooting and get no noise at all, then you can send the filter itself to the warranty department here to be replaced. Put a note inside with your name, address, and phone number, and a brief description of the problem. Mail it to:

Hello,
Have you taken out the impeller? You have to take off the cover on the bottom of the filter which has the vertical slots in it. Some models require that you take out the screws holding this cover on. On other models you just pop it off. Then you can access the motor. On some models there is a sliding cover on the motor base with slots in it and you slide that off to get to the impeller. On others you'll just see the impeller. It will be a cylinder magnet with attached fan blades in a circle. Take the impeller out and soak it in a cup of distilled white vinegar. Let it soak a few hours. Also, use a Q-tip on the hole inside the motor and make sure it is clean. Then rinse the parts well and re-assemble the filter. If you are still having problems, call us at 1-800-526-0650 or email us at: consumersupport@unitedpetgroup.com. If you email we will need your name, address, and phone number.

Question

tetra whisper internal fliter 10i

I have just purchased the above named filter system, and my question refers to the power chord. When I put the appliance in the water the power chord runs along side the system in the water itself. Is this correct? I see no other way to connect the filter without the power chord being in the water. Is this correct or am I doing something wrong and just do not understand how to set it up correctly? I find it difficult to believe an electric chord submerged in the water could be correct! Help!! I love the silence of the filter. I have read the instructions that came with the filter, but it does not explain enough about the electric chord except to hang it over the side which I have done. Please answer as soon as possible. Many thanks, nancy

You do not clean the cartridge, you replace it once a month with a new one. The foam should just be lightly rinsed out with each water change. You can squeeze it, much like a sponge, in a bucket of aquarium water.

First off did u hear some rattling before u set up ur filter? I heard mine rattling and the intake cover inside the lower basket needed to be snapped back into place. If this was the case I can see it inhibiting the intake flow. Check this first. If it is ok then I would pour water in thru the top till it starts flowing on its own.

When first setting up the Whisper Internal Power Filter (3i,10i, 20i, 40i series), you will want to ensure that the water level in your aquarium is just under the return "lip" of the filter. To help the filter begin filtrating, please also prime the filter by adding water to the internal basin of the filter before plugging in.

Bio Scrubber fit on 40i

The bio-scrubber cartridge does not fit tightly in the filter housing. I see there is a notch on each side for the scrubber to fit into, but the fit is soo loose, it just falls out of the notches, the floats around freely in front of the filter.

That is usually due to a high level of phosphates in the water or an overdose of a water conditioner. Just change about 1/4 of the water and add some plain water in. If you have chlorinated tap water, use natural spring water from the bottle instead, for this water change.

Question

Tetra Whisper Internal Power Filter

I would like to know if you you have replacement (upper) tank support arms/bracket (the arm that attaches to the back of the pump body and hooks over the top edge of the tank) available? Mine is severally bent and appears as though it may break any day (it seems pretty flimsy to support the weight of the filter while in use).
Other than that arm/bracket, this seems to be a great filter and is tremendously quiet. I haven't had it long (3mo.?) and over all I'm very happy with it (aside from that arm/bracket making me nervous).
Thanks,
Bill

Hello,

Check for any clogs in the tubing or a dirty cartridge. Also, if this is the Whisper 3i Filter, make sure there are no kinks in the airline tubing, and that water has not back-siphoned into the air pump. If you cannot fix this issue, you may either return it to the store for an exchange, or ship it into us for a new one. Our address is Tetra, 3001 Commerce Street, Blacksburg, VA 24060.

Hello,

Rinsing it out is not cleaning it well enough. You need to take it completely apart and clean it with distilled white vinegar, paying close attention to the impeller and the well of the motor, where the impeller resides. Lifespan of our filters is 10-20 years.

The water probably got cloudy due to a bacteria bloom, which isn't a bad thing, actually. Your water is regulating itself to properly house the fish. It will clear on its own. The filter should be stirring the water a good deal - good water movement is necessary to keep the water quality good.
