Hello,
The Aquasafe for Goldfish is 7 drops per gallon or 5 ml (one capful) for 10 gallons. So you'll need to use one capful plus 7x5 drops or 35 drops for your whole tank volume. If you use slightly too much of the Aquasafe it won't hurt anything but may make some suds at the top of the water for a while. If you change the partial amount of water it is best to put the replacement water in a bucket and treat it for the amount of water in the bucket. Let it sit a few minutes before adding to the aquarium. The replacement water should be near the temperature of the water in the fish tank so you might need to let it sit and adjust to room temperature before you put it in the aquarium.

We don't recommend that - yes, the water will eventually start to go bad, or go stagnant, like any water that isn't moving or filtered. Use fresh water each time you add water to your aquarium, and pre-treat it with AquaSafe for Goldfish.

Question

What makes this different to ordinary aquasafe?

My old bottle of "Aquasafe", neutralises, adds vitamins, has colloids for gills, and bioextracts for bacteria. Why would I buy the more expensive Goldfish version?

This would be optional. Goldfish put off a lot of ammonia & this cause stress, along with issues with their slime coat. This version would help with those issues.
Thanks.

We would recommend Aquasafe Plus, and Tetra Safestart on a regular basis, along with Marineland's White Diamond to your filter. White Diamond is zeolite, a fossilized rock that will pull ammonia from the water. Goldfish tend to produce a lot of ammonia. We also recommend aquarium salt at a rate of 2 tablespoons per 10 gallons of water, monthly or during times of stress. Do not overdose it.

You are experiencing two things: an ammonia spike and a bacterial bloom. In general, it is recommended to start with only 1 fish per 10 gallons of water to avoid an ammonia spike. With goldfish, it is even harder to avoid an ammonia spike as they produce a lot of it. Just change about 2 gallons of water, and replace it with new water conditioned with a tap water conditioner. Make sure you only feed once a day, 1 flake per fish to also help prevent any further ammonia from developing. Purchase an ammonia test kit and check your water daily. If the ammonia continues to rise, do a small daily water change until it gets under control.

Yes, it can be added straight into the tank with the fish in it. In fact, if your fish ever gets injured or sick, we recommend dosing the tank once a day to help it recover.

Just dose for the amount of water you will be adding to the tank, not the whole tank. You can dose the whole tank, but it is not necessary, unless you have sick fish. Any time you have sick fish, it is a good idea to dose it once a day.

Question

I accidentally used an expired bottle of the water conditioner. Is it ok?

I have 2 - 10 gallon aquariums that each house 1 goldfish each. I changed the water and added the water conditioner before I added the new water to the aquarium 3 days ago. One of my goldfish is acting crazy. He's swimming around all the time and doesn't stop to rest at all. He's going to the top of the water like he's breathing all the time. He even slammed the side of his body into the gravel. I checked for Ick and didn't see it so I thought to check the conditioners expiration date and that's when I saw that it was 4 months past the expiration date. Will he be ok? He's an old guy, 3 years.

Being past the expiration date will not hurt anything; the product does not go bad, per se. And all it does is remove chlorine/chloramines. It sounds like your fish may have picked up parasites during the water change. Test your water quality though, for ammonia, nitrite and pH. If necessary add 2 tablespoons of aquarium salt to help him out, and then treat with Parasite Guard.

And he is still a baby. Goldfish are not old till they are more than 20 years old!

Question

Preparing the aquarium water

Our son gave us a 29-gallon tank and eventually, we would like to put three goldfish and few tetras in it. Can I use the Aquasafe for Goldfish to treat a new full tank of freshwater and if so, how long do I need to cycle the treated water before putting in the fishes.

Yes, it is perfectly okay to use it for any fish and for starting a new tank. The tank does not cycle without a fish in it, but you would want to operate the tank for at least 24 hours to get your temperature correct.

In regards to mixing goldfish and tetras, this is typically not a good idea. Once the goldfish are big enough, they will eat the tetras, if the tetras have survived the amount of waste the goldfish product. Also, tetras want a water temperature of about 78 degrees, while goldfish require 68-72 degrees.
