Maintaining the proper pH of aquarium water is important to ensure a healthy environment. Changes in pH can be caused by the breakdown of waste or local tap water with low pH or low alkalinity. Correct pH maintains the recommended levels in your aquarium to prevent harmful fluctuations.

This can be due to a large amount of organic matter in the tank. A good vacuuming of the gravel and a 25% water change once a week will keep this situation in hand, and clear the water.

Question

Tetra Easy Balance made my water cloudy

I have a new 55 gal aquarium, has been up and running for about a week. We are on well water and it is very hard water. I used Easy Balance to lower the PH and the water has become cloudy. What other water can I put in my aquarium or how can I reduce the hard water & PH etc?

Good morning,
Congratulations on your new setup. Unfortunately, what goes hand-in-hand with a new aquarium is cloudy water. This is showing either an ammonia spike (if you have added in fish and do not have enough beneficial bacteria to offset the waste load) or the initial cycling of your aquarium. The Easy Balance is simply a water conditioner that helps maintain a neutral level of buffers in your aquarium over time. If you have hard water and a high pH, you may think about at least offsetting partial water during normal water changes with RO water to slowly bring your pH and hardness levels down to a neutral zone.

I am interested in the chemistry of the Correct pH tablets, and how they actually do the job.

The tablet is a mix of both acid and base buffers. If the pH is high the acid buffers dissolve and lower the pH but when the pH is low (<7) the base buffers (like carbonates) dissolve and raise the pH. You might want to Google buffers and their chemical nature form some basic background info on them. Our formula is proprietary.
