I assume that the rubber diaphram in the air pump is cracked. This happens in many pumps usually after about one year. Rather than just replacing it with another diaphram that will also crack in a year, just take the diaphram and coat the outside of it in a layer of aquarium silicone caulk, (you can find this at most hardware stores). Make sure that the layer is thick enough to seal the crack. Don't gob the silicone on or the diaphram will be too stiff to flex and the air pump won't pump enough. If you want to you can also apply a very, very thin layer on the inside of the diaphram over just the crack(s).

Question

Can a whisper 100 pump be repaired?

During the recent power outage of 3 days caused by the early snow, water backed up into the diaphram sections of the pump. I dryed them out as soon as I could. The system looks and sounds like it is functioning properly but now the air pressure comming out is much decreased. Is there a way to repair the pump or should I replace the entire unit?

SAFETY FIRST. Always place your pump above the level of your tank. If you have to place your pump on the ground or below your tank then you MUST have a check valve to prevent the water siphoning back into your pump.
Dry and clean each flapper. These can collect dust over a period of time and with the water it becomes like a sludge that holds the flapper in the open position. Straighten a paper clip and stick it in the tube where the air comes out to clear it. Use a q-tip (or wrap a napkin around the flat end of a pencil) and clean the little chamber where the flapper sits. Put it back together and try it out. If it is still struggling then you may have to replace the unit.
Remember, water and current don't mix. If you saw water on the ground around your pump I would say for safety you should replace the unit.

Hello,

Water may have permanently damaged the unit. If you are certain you completely dried all of the parts out, then you might try a replacement parts kit. This would come with a whole new valve block, diapragms, etc. Essentially, everything but the motor. They cost around $10-$15 in local fish stores. You can also purchase them through www.aquariumguys.com or our website.

How much noise an air pump makes can depend on how it is installed, what size it is, and what it is running in the tank. We would need more information on your tank and how the pump is installed to be able to properly assist you. However, it should be above the tank or below the tank with a check valve installed inline. It should be within 6-8 feet of the airstone, bubble wand or ornament it is operating. It should be sized appropriately to the tank. For example, do not run a Whisper 60 on a 20 gallon tank with a one inch airstone. This creates a lot of back pressure and makes the pump noisy. You HAVE to use both ports, one cannot be left unused, or again, it makes a lot of noise (and wears out the pump). For more assistance, please contact our support staff at 1-800-526-0650.

Probably so, as we have not manufactured that pump since 1997 or 1998 so even though you have owned it for only 5 years, the diaphragms are much, much older. Also, diaphragms typically need changing approximately every 2 years, so yours are way past due. Unfortunately, as we have not made them since the 1990's, even if you find some out there, be careful, as they are also old, and may have dry rotted.

Question

Can the connector be replaced?

I have a tetra whisper air pump with two connections on the side. One of the connections where you plug a hose into is cracked off. This is only about a year old. I would hate to have to buy a new pump because of a small weak piece of plastic that's cracked. I hope this can be replaced. Thank you

We do not measure them in cc's. We use liters/minute. The 40 is 1.3 l/min and the 100 is 3.3 with both ports "teed". At a depth of 24", if that helps.

Depends on what you want to attach to the air pump. A small air stone, less than 3 or 4" in length, it should. Anything larger, or with multiple items, probably won't. For deep applications, we usually recommend the Whisper 150 or 300. They are built differently and are for deep or very large jobs.

We do not test in cfm, but in liters/minute. That particular pump does 1.0 l/m. If you do the conversion, that comes out to be .035.

Attach about a foot of tubing to the pump by pushing it onto the nozzle or port of the pump. You may need to soak it in very hot tap water to make the tubing more flexible so it will go onto the port.

Once the tubing is on, insert the check valve, following the directions of the check valve so the arrow points toward the pond.

Push the remaining tubing that you need to reach your location, onto the othe port of the check valve. Push the bubbler into the far end, and drop it into the water.

Plug in the pump.

Non-ul pumps are more basic and do not meet UL standards. It would vary, but for example, the electrical cord may not be as water resistant or something. Non-ul pumps are for OEM manufacturers. In other words, they go into another company's product.

It doesn't pull anything, and it does not create a vacuum. You attach airline tubing to it, and to an airstone in the tank, and it pushes air into the tank to create bubbles through the stone, adding additional oxygen to your water.

An air pump is to operate items like air stones, bubble wands, and ornaments that move in the water. You attach airline tubing, a check valve, and whatever item you wish to have in the tank, such as a treasure chest opening and shutting, or a led bubble wand that lights up. It blows air into the item, and the item makes bubbles.

The additional air bubbles are very beneficial to the tank, increasing your biological filter, and oxygen levels.
